Most of us give a lot of thought to the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of our families. We try to choose the best foods, the best exercises and physical activities, the best parenting methods, and so on. Yet, it often seems like there is just not enough time to do all the things we wish to do.

Fortunately, these days there are several online resources that give you the latest research findings and wellness tips from health care professionals and personal growth trainers; that too in compact articles and “how to” pieces that are easy to digest as well as follow.

What Defines your Wellbeing Levels?

Well-being can come from some surprising sources. For example, many people living in big cities or metropolises tend to blame metro health negatives for many of their stresses. Most people will take it as a given that wellbeing New York or Wellbeing Boston is a lot more difficult (even impossible!) to achieve as compared to achieving well-being when living in a small town in rural Vermont. But, this is not the case. In fact, studies conducted in New York City showed that a surprising number of people manage to live longer, healthier, and fuller lives as compared to the average American, even when living in this chaotic metro.

So, what exactly is it that defines a person’s well-being levels? Well, this can be a difficult question to answer as there is a high degree of subjectivity involved. What gives one individual a sense of contentment and positive self-worth may not hold any meaning for another. Nevertheless, the many factors that define people’s overall wellness or well-being levels can be organized and sorted into four main categories:

· Purpose: Having a clear sense of purpose is the single most important factor that separates a secure, happy, content, and productive individual from an unhappy and stressed-out person.

The need to know that through our choices and actions, we are actually making a positive and meaningful contribution to the world around us is the most basic and essential of human necessities. People who have a clear idea of what they really wish to achieve in their lives are able to use the knowledge as a mental, emotional, and moral compass; making their decisions easier and allowing them to make the right life choices for maximum happiness and personal fulfillment.

· Passions: The second factor affecting a person’s wellbeing levels is the amount of time they spend indulging in their true interests and passions.

All of us will have some idea, purpose, or activity that can always inspire us and push us to overcome the limits and reach new highs. People who have achieved a true sense of well-being are generally those who have spent time identifying their true passions and who now spend a part of their lives in working toward these goals.

In one way, passion and purpose are eternally intertwined as you cannot have one without the other. Without identifying your real passions, you will not be able to find out your true life purpose. And without purpose, your whole life becomes meaningless, preventing you from achieving your passions.

· People: Those who have achieved true wellbeing are generally surrounded by nourishing relationships.

Your individual relationships with those around you, especially your close friends, family, and collogues, go a long way in contributing or detracting from your overall happiness and serenity. A happy home and a true sense of team spirit in the workplace is one of the most important factors contributing to an individual’s personal and professional success. In contrast, difficult or unhealthy relationships can sour both the home as well as the workplace, preventing members from achieving optimum levels of success and personal satisfaction.

· Pleasure: Last but not the least is pleasure. By pleasure, we mean the activities and ideas that give us lasting happiness and contentment. Unfortunately, many of us tend to treat pleasure as a rare and hard-won reward rather than an integral requirement for leading a happy and satisfying life. As a result, we carefully restrict the things that make us happy, doling them out to ourselves in meager measures at those rare times when we feel that we have lived up to our own (often impossible high) personal standards. But, this is a very counterproductive way of living life.

Pleasure is not a reward for a job well done; it is a basic human need and needs to be treated as such. As we spend the time to get to know ourselves, we will be able to better identify the things that truly make us happy. Spend a little time each day topping up your “pleasure tanks” with activities such as: laze a few minutes in the morning sun with a cup of tea instead of jumping out of bed and hitting the ground running; make full use of your lunch hour, taking the time to eat a leisurely lunch at a nearby park instead of inhaling a stale sandwich at your desk while in pursuit of yet another deadline. You will soon find yourself becoming a lot more energetic and productive, and, most importantly, happier as time passes. The investments in your pleasure tanks will translate into extra energy and a renewed enthusiasm for life that will more than repay the initial commitment.

To conclude, wellbeing is one of the most precious gifts any person can possess. This year, take the time to commit to true physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing for you and your family.

Importance of General Wellbeing to Individuals

Research shows that there is a definite and undeniable correlation between general wellbeing and a person’s overall self-esteem as well as happiness and success levels.

Wellbeing or wellness is actually a very broad concept that incorporates a wide variety of factors: physical, mental, social, and emotional. The food you eat, the work you do, the kind of physical activities you indulge in, the quantity and quality of time you spend with family and friends – these are just some of the things that contribute to the overall wellness levels of you and your family.

Today in medicine, doctors and health care professionals are paying more and more attention to a patient’s overall well-being. People who are happy, secure, and content fall sick a lot less as compared to tense, stressed-out, or unhappy individuals. They also have a better chance of recovering quickly and fully from any illness as compared to the latter.
